To maintain, enhance, and restore the rich, natural resources of Fairfield.
Maintaining, enhancing and restoring the rich natural resources in Fairfield is the mission of the Conservation Department which serves to conserve, develop, supervise, and regulate natural resources—both water resources and open space land
The Conservation Department manages the town’s 1,200 acres of open space, 200 areas of restored salt marshes and regulates activities on 800 acres of inland wetland-regulated areas and 1,000 acres of shellfish grounds. The Conservation Department also provides and maintains signs and notices for protected land and water areas, coordinating with enforcement agencies. The Department also involves the community through outreach projects in the schools and scouts and through public meetings.
Operating under the Conservation Department is the Conservation Commission, the Shellfish Commission, and the Inland Wetlands Agency.
