Fairfield’s annual “Green Wheels Expo,” held on September 14, 2019 lived up to its emerging reputation as one of the New England region’s most distinctive exhibitions of electric vehicles, attracting some 500 attendees who viewed 56 EVs, the most exhibited at any similar Connecticut event by far. Fairfield’s exhibition also is now firmly within the top ranks of such shows nationally in terms of number of vehicles on display.
Sponsored by the Sustainable Fairfield Task Force and now in its fifth year, the Expo is designed to showcase the Town of Fairfield’s commitment to EV adoption as well as help educate residents about the growing advantages of EVs.
Some of the most innovative and popular EV models in the market were brought to the Expo by local EV dealers and private owners, including the Tesla Model 3, Model S, Model X, and Roadster; the Chevrolet Bolt and Volt; the BMW i3 Rex and i8; the Hyundai KONA Electric; the Jaguar I-Pace; the 2020 Mini Countryman Plug-in Hybrid; the Nissan Leaf, the Subaru Crosstrek PHEV, and the Volvo XC90 AWD PHEV – with all the models on display representing nearly 900,000 e-miles driven.
On hand for the event, Fairfield First Selectman Mike Tetreau praised event participants and organizers, and underscored the Town’s strong commitment to EV adoption – pointing out that “electric vehicles are quiet, safe, and affordable.” Indeed, more and more vehicle owners nationwide are becoming attuned to EVs’ powerful advantages, including a clear environmental benefit as well as dramatically lower operating costs and an appealing “fun factor.” In fact, there were 208,000 new registrations for electric vehicles in the U.S. in 2018, more than double the number filed in 2017.
The sponsors of this year’s “Green Wheels Expo” included Aquarion, Greater New Haven Clean Cities Coalition, CT Southwestern Area Clean Cities Coalition, Live Green CT,Maritime Chevrolet, and United Illuminating.
