The station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. According to the 1988 NRHP application "The Fairfield railway stations are significant as reminders of the important role of railroad passenger service in the historical development of Fairfield, as artifacts of the New Haven Railroad, a company that virtually monopolized the state's public transportation at the end of the 19th century, and as well-preserved examples of small-town station architecture".

Directions

  • Northbound on I-95 (from Westport) to Exit 21.  At the bottom of the exit ramp, turn right.  The entrance to the Train Station (main parking area) is 200 yards on the left.
  • Southbound on I-95 (from Bridgeport) to Exit 21.  At the bottom of the exit ramp, turn left.  The entrance to the Train Station (main parking area) is 200 yards on the left.
  • Mill Plain Road Lot at 140 Mill Plain Road. At the end of the Main Lot, turn right onto Mill Plain Road going north.  The first light is at the intersection of Ludlowe Road and Mill Plain Road, across from the Sportsplex and the Fairfield Recreation Center. Continue straight, and the Mill Plain Lot will be on the immediate right, across from St. Thomas Cemetery. This lot is temporarily closed to commuters, parkers and the public. Please do not park in this lot until further notice.
 
Station Parking

Both Day Parking and Permit Parking is available at the Fairfield Center Station in the Main Lot. Daily parking is free after 5:00 pm, on the weekends and on major/federal holidays. There is one EV charging station in the Mill Plain Lot for train station customers' use only.  Customers parking in the charging station space must display a Fairfield Center Train Station parking permit or are subject to the same daily parking fees. Please note the Mill Plain Lot is temporarily closed to all parkers, commuters and public. Please do not park in the Mill Plain Lot until further notice.

According to the ADA Compliance Law one station in each town is required to be handicap accessible. While Fairfield Center Station is not handicap accessible, the Fairfield Metro Station is fully handicap accessible with handicap ramps, elevators and platforms that lead directly to the train.

Eastbound Station

The eastbound station is brick and was built in 1882. The businesses utilizing the rental spaces include Nauti Dolphin Pizza Restaurant.

Westbound Station

The westbound station is a wooden structure and serves as an prime example of the common New Haven Railroad 1890s facilities. The business utilizing the rental space includes Rise and Shine Coffee Shop.
