About the Department of Public Works
One of the busiest departments in town, The Public Works Department oversees key areas of public works: engineering, roads, storm water drainage systems, parks, beaches, marinas, public buildings, wastewater treatment plants, and sewer collection systems. Carrying out the policies and objectives set by the various boards and commissions, the Public Works Department works to protect the town’s investment in its infrastructure.
The Public Works Department maintains nearly 300,000 square feet of building space and provides carpentry, electrical, roofing HVAC, masonry, sheetrock, painting, alarm and communications systems installation, trash collection and more for these spaces.
In addition to maintaining existing spaces and roadways, the Public Works Department undertakes new construction projects, among them, streets, storm drains, seawalls, ball fields, sidewalks, recreation facilities, and some buildings and offices.
Seasonally, crews are busy around town doing leaf collection, feeding/trimming/maintaining street and park trees, snow plowing, beach clean-up, park maintenance, ball field maintenance and repairs, road mowing and more. The Public Works Department also maintains our streets with litter control, sewer and draining maintenance, line painting, paving, and more. And it maintains and cleans up to 185 miles of drainage pipe and catch basins.
Helping to keep the town festive, Public Works crews set up town decorations for Christmas, July 4, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day. The department also sets up for various events, youth events, marathons and “Concerts on the Green.”
