First Selectman Tetreau announced that the Town of Fairfield’s Shellfish Commission will host a clam clinic event at Sasco Hill Beach on June 20, 2015 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. for local residents to learn about Fairfield’s natural shellfish resources.
“This event provides an opportunity for Fairfield residents, including children, to experience the basics of harvesting shellfish while learning the importance of Fairfield’s natural shellfish ecosystem,” said Robert Bilek, Chairman of the Shellfish Commission.
Participants will be taught harvesting techniques and can keep their own catch. Gear, including clam rakes and gauges, will be provided if needed. Participants are encouraged to bring their own towels.
The Sasco Hill Beach Shellfish Bed was recently restocked with more than 9,000 clams for residents to harvest.
No permit or reservation are required, however, permits will be sold at the event for future use.
While the shellfish beds are currently closed due to the amount of rain we received earlier this week, the Clam Clinic will still be held. Clams harvested that day cannot be taken home, but we will have other locally sourced clams on hand to share with participants. Looking forward to seeing you there!
