11/5/2021 - 11.5 TOWN UPDATE Dear Fairfielders, I want to thank our residents who stepped up to run for office and congratulate those who were elected to serve our Town. The Inauguration Ceremony to swear in newly elected officials will be held on Monday, November 22 at 7:00PM at Fairfield Warde's Auditorium. I look forward to working with all our newly elected officials on continuing to improve the community that we all love. I can't say it any better than Condoleezza Rice, “There’s no greater challenge and there is no greater honor than to be in public service.” The election results can be viewed here. Due to the very close results in Districts 2, 6, and 9, for the Representative Town Meeting, there will be an official recount on Tuesday, November 9. Outside of elected office, there are others ways to get involved, give back, and have a voice in shaping our community. One of those is serving as a volunteer appointed member on one of our Town’s various boards and commissions, to provide guidance and governance. Several boards and commissions will have openings as member's terms come to an end this month and in the coming months. In anticipation of those vacancies, if you have any interest in serving on the following boards, please complete the interest form below so that we have your information on file for consideration. Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee Economic Development Commission FairTV Commission Fairfield Commission on disAbilities Greater Bridgeport Transit Board of Commissioners Harbor Management Commission Historic District Commission Human Services Commission Land Acquisition Commission Parks and Recreation Commission Solid Waste and Recycling Commission Water Pollution Control Authority (WPCA) Be sure to check back often, as the list is updated as positions become available. TOWN BOARD AND COMMISSION VACANCIES TOWN BOARD AND COMMISSION INTEREST FORM TOWN GOVERNMENT SCREEN AND STAY PROGRAM FOR SCHOOLS Yesterday, Governor Lamont announced the State would be implementing an optional Screen and Stay Program. This program this would allow students and staff who are not fully vaccinated to remain in school after close contact with a school related COVID-19 case, with a daily screening form completed by parents. Implementation of this program would mean a significant reduction in quarantining of school related close contacts from COVID-19. State officials noted this program is a result of a variety of reasons, including having community case rates that are stable-to-decreasing. Superintendent Mike Cummings and Fairfield Health Director Sands Cleary are working out the logistics of the Screen and Stay Program for Fairfield Public Schools. As they do so, additional information on the program will be shared by Superintendent Cummings with Fairfield families. NEW LIBRARIAN It was my honor to administer the oath of office to our new Town Librarian Scott Jarzombek. Scott comes to Fairfield from the Albany Public Library where he served as executive director since 2014, overseeing seven branches and a staff of 145. Scott had a large and positive impact in his last position and we look forward to him bringing new ideas and initiatives here. I want to thank Fairfield Library Board President David Gray for organizing the recruitment and hiring process for our new Head Librarian. CAPITAL PLANNING WORKSHOP Please note that the Board of Finance's Capital Planning Workshop originally scheduled for November 9 will be postponed to a future date, after the new Board of Finance members are sworn in, and after they have their first organizational meeting in December. CHARTER REVISION COMMISSION Elected officials have been invited by the Charter Revision Commission to provide input on the Town Charter on Monday, November 8 at 6:30PM. I encourage all our residents to take the time to read the Town Charter and participate in these meetings that will be occurring over the next year. Any recommendations put forth by the Commission will be reviewed by the Town's Board of Selectmen and will ultimately be placed on next year's November 2022 ballot for all Fairfield residents to vote on. This is democracy in action and I hope our community will engage in this process. Charter Revision Commission Website Fairfield Town Charter FIRE DEPARTMENT CHANGE YOUR CLOCK, CHANGE YOUR BATTERIES Every fall, the Fairfield Fire department and Energizer work to remind people of the simple, life-saving habit of changing and testing the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when setting the clocks back for daylight saving time. PARKS & RECREATION I was excited to see the before and after pics of the new playground replacement at Pine Creek Avenue Park! I want to thank our Parks and Recreation Director Anthony Calabrese and his staff for getting this done for the families of Fairfield. It looks awesome and I hope everyone enjoys this new playground. BEFORE AFTER POLICE DEPARTMENT As we enter the holiday season, the police department is expecting to see more reported package thefts in Town. They encourage everyone to: Use technology to track your deliveries Be home when a package arrives, or if possible, have a family member or friend secure the package Arrange for the delivery service not to drop off the package without a signature, if that option is offered Use 'Ring,' 'Nest,' and other similar systems with audio/video capabilities as a deterrent FAIRFIELD RENEWS ITS CERTIFICATION AS ONE OF STATE'S TOP "SUSTAINABLE CT" COMMUNITIES Fairfield has again been named a top “Sustainable CT” community under a statewide program that recognizes Connecticut’s most thriving and resilient municipalities. The Sustainable CT initiative awards certifications to Connecticut communities that voluntarily meet high standards in a broad range of sustainability accomplishments. Fairfield is one of just 12 towns statewide to receive a Silver certification, the program’s highest designation. Fairfield also earned Silver-level honors in the program’s initial certification process, which was conducted in fall 2018. We are thrilled that we have once again earned recognition as one of Connecticut’s most desirable places in which to live, work and raise a family. I want to thank the Sustainable Fairfield Task Force (SFTF) who compiled Fairfield's application for this program and all of the dedicated citizens, volunteers, Town employees and officials who work so hard together every day to serve Fairfield’s common good. SOLID WASTE AND RECYLING COMMUNITY NEWS EAGLE SCOUT BUILDS COVID-19 MEMORIAL IN TOWN Last Thursday, we recognized Lin Sunil, a Fairfield Warde High School Senior, who designed and built a COVID-19 Memorial for his Eagle Scout project. Fairfield’s Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously approved this project, which is located at a highly visible place in our community. Lin felt this was important because COVID-19 has had a huge impact on our Fairfield community, including his own family. I want to thank Lin for focusing his Eagle Scout project on Fairfielder’s who lost their lives to COVID-19. I also want to recognize the Town’s Parks and Recreation Department and Commission, as well as our Parks’ crew, which helped create the walkway to the Memorial and will be working with Lin to add park benches. I’m so proud of this fine young man's love and commitment to our community. RESTAURANT WEEK There are two days left in the 10th Annual Fairfield Restaurant Week. Co-owner Sue Longo says, “Whether you have enjoyed crystals for your whole life or it’s a new adventure for you, please come visit us, and experience the calming, soothing energy of the store!” I want to thank the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce for organizing the ribbon cutting and our Director of Economic and Community Development Mark Barnhart and State Representative Jennifer Leeper for officiating in my absence. I hope you'll join me in wishing Element50 great success! DRUG TAKE BACK DAY A SUCCESS About 210 pounds of old or unused medications were sent to the incinerator on Saturday, October 24th as a result of Drug Take Back Day. According to Officers Gary Wikman and Paul Medvegy, Fairfield residents are consistently using the green Drop Box in the Police Department’s lobby to safely dispose of old medications. Twice a year, the Fairfield Police Department, the Fairfield CARES Community Coalition, and Fairfield’s Local Prevention Council and partner to conduct Drug Take Back Day to raise awareness on the importance of safely disposing of unneeded mediations. Safely disposing of medications prevents their misuse by others. FAIRFIELDERS' GENEROSITY BUILDS MATERNITY WARD IN SENEGAL In September, Wally Thiam, a native of Senegal and cashier at the Pantry on Post Road, was recognized for his efforts in raising money to build a maternity ward back home in Senegal. After learning of the high maternal mortality rates due to inadequate care in his community, Wally knew he needed to do something. He partnered with friend Susan Levine, a local dentist in Fairfield, and together raised over $20,900 with the generosity of this community. With the money raised, they were able to provide funding for a medical facility in Senegal that had an unfinished maternity ward. It was a pleasure to meet and personally thank Wally for his efforts and bringing our community together for such a worthy cause. If you would like to read Wally's story in whole, click here. THE FAIRFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND THE TOWN OF FAIRFIELD CELEBRATE 1ST ANNIVERSARY OF BUY LOCAL INITITATIVE The Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Town of Fairfield, is proud to announce that over $76,000 in eGift Cards have been purchased since the program originally launched last October, 2020. From the very beginning of the pandemic, Fairfield residents quickly stepped up to help our community through fundraising, food collection, curb-side pick-ups, and getting dinner to go at our restaurants to help them stay open. The e-gift program gives our residents another opportunity to support restaurants, coffee shops, and local retail stores. The holidays are coming, and this program makes gift giving easy and supports our local businesses If you would like to purchase an eGift Card, click here. VETERAN'S DAY Words cannot describe the debt of gratitude that is due to our Nation's Veterans. This upcoming Thursday (Town Hall will be closed), I hope you take the time on Veteran's Day either alone or at our Annual Veteran's Day Ceremony to reflect on the sacrifices made on our behalf. On November 11, 2021 at 11AM near the Veterans Wall of Honor, on the Town Green at 611 Old Post Road, our two local American Legions will be hosting our Annual Veteran's Day Ceremony. I am particularly proud to announce that the Town will be honoring the late Michael J Daly, U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a lifelong resident of Fairfield who epitomized the definition of a true American and hometown hero. Captain Daly received the United States military's highest decoration for valor - the Medal of Honor - for single handedly eliminating 15 German soldiers including a German patrol, and destroying three machine-gun nests. Recently the Board of Selectmen voted to place a plaque with Mr. Daly's name installed at the base of the Flag Pole in his honor. I want to thank Selectmen Flynn for bringing this before the Board for consideration. The ceremony, will be held rain or shine. The dress code for Veterans attending the ceremony is blue and gray, and Post Commanders should bring unit colors and stand. Following the November 11th ceremony, the Eunice Dennis Burr Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), with the assistance of Boy Scout Troop 10, will provide a light lunch for Veterans and their families on the lawn in front of the Old Fairfield Academy which is located at 635 Old Post Road near the Old Town Hall. The Fairfield DAR is a volunteer women’s service organization that promotes patriotism, education, and historic preservation. The public is welcome to attend this event. Below is updated COVID-19 information and the new vaccine information for those ages 5-11. I hope you have a safe and enjoyable weekend. Brenda L. It's great to see innovation from residents right here in Town and I wish them great success. Read more here. AT HOME COVID-19 TESTING KITS As Fairfield comes out of the latest wave of the pandemic, testing is important now more than ever to help keep the spread of the virus low. The Health Department is urging residents to get tested if they feel unwell regardless of vaccination status. In additional to severe COVID-19 symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, COVID-19 symptoms can be mild in nature especially among the vaccinated and include sore throat, congestion/runny nose, loss of taste and smell, headache, body aches and/or fatigue. There are many different COVID-19 testing options here in Fairfield. While the newly popular at home test may be most convenient, there can be problems with accuracy of results. The Health Department strongly recommends anyone who is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or has been exposed to an individual receive a PCR test, as that is the most reliable testing for COVID-19. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself from severe illness and hospitalization. The CT Department of Public Health recommends that anyone who is unvaccinated get vaccinated as soon as possible. You can simply text your zip code to GETVAX to find a location near you. Last year more than 150 families received gift cards, generously donated by their neighbors, including individuals, businesses, faith-based and community organizations. COVID-19 has brought many challenges from job loss to childcare expense and many worries in between. Rather than collecting wrapped gifts and toys, we are again requesting gift cards for supermarkets, gas stations, your favorite local stores and businesses, Amazon, Target, Walmart - anywhere families shop for their loved ones for the holidays. During this special, yet stressful time of year, our goal is to support with gift cards to help purchase items for their loved ones. That ability to select and purchase gifts provides our clients another level of independence in an otherwise difficult time. On behalf of the families that receive the holiday gifts, the Town of Fairfield Department of Human and Social Services would like to thank the community for keeping all our residents in mind for the upcoming holiday season. We hope that residents will continue to support their neighbors.
