Fairfield’s Annual Earth Day Observance Features

Week-Long Series of Open-Air and “Virtual” Family-Friendly Events

Fairfield CT, April 19, 2021 – Fairfield’s annual Earth Day observation will kick off on Monday, April 19 with a week-long celebration of spring and Planet Earth that – in a nod to the lingering COVID-19 pandemic – will be mostly centered online, but will also include an open-air event on Saturday, April 24, showcasing some of today’s most exciting electric-powered vehicles.

As last year, the online hub for the celebration, sponsored by the Sustainable Fairfield Task Force (SFTF), will be a dedicated website -- www.sustainablefairfield.org – offering information on the full event schedule as well as a venue for viewing the week’s “virtual” activities, including informational sessions and a special music concert on Earth Day itself (Thursday, April 22).

Below are event highlights.  Please be sure to come back to the Earth Week website up to and throughout Earth Week for up-to-date details of these and other activities.

• Earth Day Celebration at the Fairfield YMCA, 841 Old Post Road, Saturday, April 24, 10 am - 4 pm:The day will feature an electric vehicle showcase providing a close-up look at EV models including the Mustang Mach-e, Tesla Model Y, Chevrolet Bolt, Vertrix VX-1 e-bike, Nissan Leaf, and many more. Young attendees also can visit the “Kid’s Gardening Table” for free seedlings and seeds to take home, take part in a scavenger hunt and play with mini solar cars.
• 2nd Annual Earth Music Concert, Thursday, April 22, 7 pm:Hosted by Fairfield author/journalist, local radio host and SFTF member Jim Motavalli, this program of live, environmentally themed music performances will feature musicians based in Fairfield County and beyond, including Xanthe Alexis, Exit 46, Allan Harris, Kristin Korb, Vivian Leva and Riley Calcagno, Liz McNicholl, Greg Packham, Clint Roberts, Carol Sudhalter, and Dan Tressler.Tune in to the SFTF’s YouTube channel to watch the concert LIVE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCna7YMyCA4O-b6kEP3DI_zg
• Daily Earth Week Webinars:During Earth Week, check out www.sustainablefairfield.org for a series of daily, noontime Webinars featuring local environmental/sustainability experts and legislators/officials discussing the state of play on urgent topics shaping the health, vitality and preservation of our local environment.Topics and participants now scheduled include:
  • Wednesday, April 21, 12 pm:Climate Change and Health CT 2020, featuring Laura Bozzi, Director of Programs, Center on Climate Change and Health, Yale School of Public Health; Lisa Deeds, American Medical Response, and Ruth Canovi, American Lung Association
  • Friday, April 23, 12 noon: Legislator Forum, featuring Senator Tony Hwang; Rep. Cristin McCarthy Vahey; Rep. Laura Devlin; Rep. Jennifer Leeper

• The Mill River Wetlands Committee’s special open-air exploration of Fairfield’s Mill River ecosystem, on Thursday, April 22, from 4 to 5:30 pm, co-led by SFTF member Kiersten Chou. The exploration gives participants a chance to observe the Mill River ecosystem and how it works, identify complex relationships among living and non-living things, and learn what disturbing the balance of that ecosystem means.To sign up for the program, please go to https://www.signupgenius.com/go/earthday
• “Shop, Stroll and Love Local This Spring,” on Thursday, April 22, co-sponsored by the Town and the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the SFTF.Participating shops in downtown Fairfield will be open from 10 am through 9 pm offering patrons a fun and relaxing time to browse, shop and truly Love Local with a variety of spring celebratory promotions.More information is available on the Town of Fairfield website here.
