Fairfield CT, Sept. 21, 2020 --- Fairfield’s Green Wheels Expo will be virtual this year – but it’s going to kick off with a real parade.
Marking the start of the Town’s annual celebration of electric vehicles (EVs), 30 of the latest EV models will wind across Westport and Fairfield on Sunday morning, Sept. 27, giving parade watchers an up-close – but safe and socially distanced – look at the future of transportation.
Organized with support from the EV Club of CT and the Town of Westport – and led by Westport’s nationally recognized Tesla 3 EV retrofitted for police duty – the parade begins at 10 am at Donut Crazy on the Westport/Saugatuck train station’s northbound side. The parade will finish at Fairfield’s Old Town Hall, 611 Old Post Road, as Fairfield Selectwoman Nancy Lefkowitz waves the checkered flag. A map of the entire parade route is visible here at the SustainableFairfield.org site.
The Green Wheels Expo is organized annually by the Sustainable Fairfield Task Force (SFTF). Expo activities will be accessible via a dedicated website, with a welcome message from Fairfield First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick, at the Green Wheels Expo tab at SustainableFairfield.org. The site will feature EV webinars from Monday, Sept. 28 to Friday, Oct. 2, daily at 1 pm, plus a showcase of new EV models, informational articles and videos, and testimonials from EV owners. Comedian and former Tonight Show host Jay Leno (now seen talking cars on CNBC's Jay Leno's Garage) will make a special guest appearance on Saturday, Sept. 26, in an extended Zoom conversation about EVs with Fairfield-based automotive writer and SFTF member Jim Motavalli.
“I’m enormously proud that Fairfield has become a national leader in supporting electric vehicles and environmentally friendly transportation,” said First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick. “We’re committed to keeping Fairfield a healthy and sustainable community – and helping our residents travel emissions-free is one of the best ways to do it. I hope that everyone has a wonderful experience at this year’s Green Wheels Expo!”
Residents who want to share their EV love online can participate in a special Expo giveaway, offering prizes – including a Tesla test drive – for the most thoughtful, creative statement on EVs. To enter, submit a picture or a short one-minute video on why you think EVs are important and why you would want one, via email to sustainablefairfieldtaskforce@gmail.com, or by using the #GWE2020EV hashtag on Instagram (public accounts only). A winner will be chosen and announced on Friday, Oct. 2.
Fairfield’s sixth annual Expo marks the Town’s observance of National Drive Electric Week (NDEW), September 26-Oct. 4, organized each year to heighten awareness of the widespread availability of plug-in vehicles and the benefits of all-electric and hybrid-electric cars, trucks, motorcycles, and more.
