9/16/2019 - Fairfield Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Celebrate Constitution Week

The Eunice Dennie Burr Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has kicked off the start of Constitution Week in the Town of Fairfield today at its headquarters on the historic Town Green.

Constitution Week, which is celebrated every September 17 through September 23, is the commemoration of America's most important document, the Constitution of the United States of America. The United States Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties, freedoms and inalienable rights.

This celebration of the Constitution was started by the national Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

To kick off this important week, the DAR’s Fairfield Chapter invited First Selectman Mike Tetreau to its headquarters at the Old Academy today, September 16, 2019, to read and issue a proclamation declaring “September 17 through September 23, 2019 as Constitution Week in the Town of Fairfield.”

The Proclamation states that the goals of the Constitution Week celebration are to emphasize citizens' responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution; inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America's great heritage and the foundation for our way of life; and encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.

First Selectman Tetreau stated, “Constitution Week gives all of us the opportunity to appreciate the freedoms we have. It is also a wonderful time for our community to honor and celebrate the importance of the Constitution.  Before issuing the Proclamation to the DAR officers, I visited Fairfield Ludlowe High School to watch 60 AP U.S. Government students write out key provisions of the U.S. Constitution in chalk on the school’s sidewalks. I am so proud of our students for learning about this important document as they created a "Chalk Walk" for other students to ‘walk the chalk’ during Constitution Week!”

The Fairfield DAR Chapter will have a display for the public about the Constitution at the Main Library on the Old Post Road during Constitution Week.
