10/23/2014 - Leaf Collection Begins Monday, November 10th

Town leaf collection will take place beginning on Monday, November 10, 2014.

There will be four weekly pickups during the weeks of November 10, November 17, December 1 and December 8 for all residents except those in the Greenfield Hill Leaf Collection Area*. There will be no pickup during Thanksgiving week, to allow residents extra time to finish their raking. There is no specific daily pickup schedule. Bags must be curbside on Mondays by 6:00 a.m. to assure pickup during that week.

Residents in the Greenfield Hill Leaf Collection Area* should call the Town Garage at 203-256-3177 before Monday, November 24, 2014 to arrange for leaf pickup before Thanksgiving and may call during the week following Thanksgiving for an additional pickup.

Leaves must be in biodegradable paper bags. Do NOT seal the paper bags.

The following will NOT be picked up:

  • plastic bags
  • loose leaves
  • brush, branches
  • wood
  • grass
  • bags placed outside of the Town right-of-way (for example: along driveways, inside stone walls or fences)

In order to avoid blocking catch basins, residents are reminded to not rake leaves into the gutter or street. Residents are also asked to make an effort to keep the catch basin grates in the vicinity of their home clear of leaves and debris to prevent local flooding.

Leaves will also be accepted at the Harvest New England facility on Richard White Way (One Rod Highway) through December 15. The facility will be open with expanded hours on Monday-Saturday 7:00 am to 4:00pm, and on Sunday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. beginning November 1. All other normal Harvest New England rules and policies remain in effect. Residents with a valid Beach/ Dump Sticker on their vehicle can drop off less than 500 pounds of Yard Waste for no fee. Vehicles with loads greater than 500 pounds or vehicles with no stickers will be charged the applicable Commercial Rate.

Harvest New England hours from December 16, 2014 through February 28, 2015 are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. They are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Harvest New England will be open on Saturday, January 10 and Saturday, January 17 for Christmas tree and other yard waste disposal from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

9am - 2pm at Veteran's Park - 909 Reef Road

The Town of Fairfield hosts its  annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on a Saturday in late August at Veteran's Park to provide you with the opportunity to dispose of household hazardous waste at no charge. Just load up your car and your car will be emptied for you.  There's no need to get out of your vehicle.  See more details below.

For information on disposing of hazardous waste all other times of the year, please visit our Hazardous Waste webpage.

What is Collected

Please click here to view a list of what household materials are accepted and which ones are not.

If you have only antifreeze, motor oil or automotive batteries, you can take them directly to the Transfer Station.

Traffic Pattern

There is a specific traffic pattern for the Collection Day.   There will be signage posted.  Police and volunteers will also be on site to direct traffic and answer questions.

To access the site proceed as follows:

  • From Old Post Road or Oldfield Road turn onto Rowland Road
  • At the third stop sign turn right onto Edward Street
  • Proceed to drop off site at Veterans Park
  • Signage is posted and police and volunteers are on site to direct traffic and answer questions.

Transporting Tips

A few tips for transporting your hazardous waste to the collection site:

  • Don't mix hazardous wastes.  Keep waste in their original containers if possible.
  • Keep hazardous waste away from children and animals.
  • Don't smoke in the vehicle.
  • For safety reasons, there will be no walk-in drop-offs on Collection Day.

Why Participate?

Chemicals from around the home, workshop or garden shed may contain substances which are difficult to dispose of safely.  Your effort will help protect our Town's environment and our region's water supply.

The Town needs volunteers from 8:30 - 11:30 or 11:00 - 2:00 on Collection Day.  Volunteers will not be handling any hazardous waste.  If you would like to volunteer please contact the Solid Waste and Recycling Department.
