First Selectman Mike Tetreau announced today that on Saturday, August 11, 2018, the Town of Fairfield will celebrate the 117th anniversary of Fairfield resident Gustave Whitehead’s historic 1901 flight which predated the Wright Brothers’ 1903 flight.

First Selectman Tetreau will read a proclamation declaring “Gustave Whitehead Day” in the Town of Fairfield at 12:00 pm at the Museum Commons, the Green adjacent to the Fairfield Museum and History Center, 370 Beach Road (Parking is also available at Independence Hall, 725 Old Post Road).

The proclamation is being issued in conjunction with the History Center’s Fairfield “Fly In” event which is being held on Saturday, August 11th from 10-2 pm at the Fairfield Museum and History Center. The event is rain or shine and is free and open to the public. Come learn about Whitehead’s historic flight experiments. View a replica of Whitehead’s “No. 21 Flyer” which was built by Fairfield resident Andy Kosch who will be in attendance.

Hobbytown will also present aerial demonstrations of remote controlled aircraft and drones while the Fairfield Flying Aces will demonstrate their remote-controlled aircraft. Kids can assemble and fly their own balsa wood model flyer!
