Pequot Library proudly announces that it has been nominated to represent Fairfield County in the American Institute of Architects 2018 Connecticut Treasures Award. This is a time of town pride for Fairfield and an opportunity to promote the Fairfield County community.
Connecticut Treasures is an electronic awards program in which the public is invited to vote for a favorite building. First Selectman Mike Tetreau encourages everyone to vote and noted, “This is such a wonderful recognition for our town and for Pequot Library. Let’s all pull together and vote for Fairfield County.”
The competition features the wealth and diversity of buildings from each of the eight Connecticut counties. In 2018, the focus of this statewide award is public and private library buildings — one gem from each county.
Voting will be open until Friday, July 27, 2018. Please cast your votes for Pequot Library at https://aiact.org/vote-2018-connecticut-treasures/. This award promotes the cultural resources of our state.
Pequot Library Association was founded in 1889 by Virginia Marquand Monroe; the library itself was designed by architect Robert Henderson Robertson and opened in 1894. Pequot has many unique and distinct features – columns and arches marking the main entrance, a recognizable Ludowici red-tiled roof, and a beautiful stone façade – that make it a beautiful example of late 19th century public architecture in the Romanesque Revival style. Expanded first in 1898, with iconic ironwork stacks, glass-tile floor, and Tiffany windows, the library is included in the National Register of Historic Places.
