Function
The Solid Waste and Recycling Commission oversees the Town's Department of Solid Waste and Recycling and the Town Transfer Station, where private haulers and Town residents bring garbage, recyclables and yard waste.
Meetings
The Solid Waste and Recycling Commission generally meets on the second Monday of the month at 7:00 pm both in-person in the Conference Room on the second floor of the Old Town Hall, 611 Old Post Road, and via Conference Call Bridge except in July, August and December. All schedules and locations are subject to change. Please check the Town Meetings Calendar for cancellations or location changes.
Most Requested Information
The Transfer Station facilities on Richard White Way operate from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday and from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturdays (closed Sundays). The Transfer Station is closed on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Fairfield participates in Single-Stream Recycling.

Propane tanks and fire extinguishers may be recycled at the Transfer Station, for a fee. For propane cylinders #1 through #5: $1.00. For propane cylinders #20 and fire extinguishers: $5.00

Description
The Solid Waste and Recycling Commission directs and supervises the activities of the Solid Waste and Recycling Department, implementing state and local mandated programs for the collection, disposal, and recycling of garbage and other refuse.
Powers and Duties
Duties include:
Preparing a Solid Waste and Recycling Plan and amending the plan periodically as required by Connecticut state statutes.
Reviewing and recommending to the RTM proposals for local and regional solid waste and recycling.
Proposing ordinances for adoption by the RTM and adopt regulations for the disposal of solid waste and recycling of recyclable materials. Such regulations shall be adopted in accordance with the Fairfield Town Charter and the General Statutes of Connecticut.
