I would like to provide an update on the Town's preparation and action plans regarding COVID-19. I first want you to know that I have partially activated the Emergency Operations Center and I have been meeting daily with our emergency response professionals and our Health Director.
We are also in constant communication with the State and other surrounding towns.
As you may know, the Superintendent announced that schools will be closed tomorrow and they will move to distance learning. I realize this presents challenges for families who work outside the home and don't have childcare.
We have also made the decision to close the gym at the Park & Recreation Center, the Town libraries including Pequot, and the Bigelow Center for Senior Activities. Seniors who rely on the nutrition meal program will be given registration information to have meals delivered to their homes.
We have canceled town events and I know that while this may be inconvenient, it is necessary to reduce community transmission. We have found ways for our budget meetings to operate online and through teleconference. Board members and the public will still be able to participate without being in the same room. I will post more information about how this process will work on the town website.
I want to emphasize the importance that our residents follow the CDC guidelines listed below to wash your hands, cover your mouth when coughing, sneezing and to practice social distancing.
Most importantly, if you or a member of your family are sick, please stay home.
If you have elderly neighbors, please be sure to check on them to help ensure they have what they need.
This is a difficult and global challenge. If we work together to take these precautions, I am hopeful this virus will have a limited impact on our community.
Please know that the safety of our community remains our top priority and that I’m doing everything in my power to protect our residents.
