2/13/2020 - February 13, 2020 Update

What’s new since our last update:

Sample results have been received for Hoyden’s Hill, Samp Mortar Drive, Tomlinson Middle School, Perry Street, Mill Hill Road, Hillside Road, and Penfield Pavilion Area.  Maps and sample results are posted on the Fill Use Website.

  • Hoydens Hill had no samples that exceeded the Residential Direct Exposure Criteria (RDEC).  One sample indicated the presences of PCBs but below the RDEC.  Additional sampling will be conducted in that area in accordance with the CT DEEP guidelines.
  • Samp Mortar Road had no samples that exceeded the RDEC.
  •  Tomlinson Middle School had no samples that exceeded the RDEC.  Additional sampling is being conducted the week of February 17th for drainage work that was done under the lower parking lot.
  •  Perry Street had 4 soil samples that exceeded the RDEC for Arsenic and 3 soil samples that exceeded the RDEC for PAHs.  One sample indicated the presences of PCBs but below the RDEC.  Additional sampling will be conducted in that area in accordance with the CT DEEP guidelines. We will be working with our LEP to determine the appropriate actions needed to address those exceedances.
  •   Mill Hill Road had no samples that exceeded the RDEC.  One sample indicated the presences of PCBs but below the RDEC.  Additional sampling will be conducted in that area in accordance with the CT DEEP guidelines.
  •   Hillside Road had 52 samples collect with 7 soil samples exceeding the RDEC for Arsenic.  Six of the seven exceedances are from 6” to 12” below grade. We will be working with our LEP to determine the appropriate actions needed to address those exceedances.
  • Penfield Pavilion Area had 55 soil and 25 debris samples collected with 2 debris samples that were found to be non- friable Asbestos Containing Building Material.  These samples were in an inaccessible area underneath the Pavilion and air sampling conducted in and around the Pavilion indicated that there is no asbestos present in the air. Additional debris samples were taken from underneath the Pavilion and the results are pending and additional soil sampling will be conducted the week of February 17th in the main parking lot.

The soil removal at Osborn Hill School in the area adjacent to the parking lot began last weekend. Samples to determine if all affected soils have been removed were submitted to the lab.  The sample results confirmed that all the affected soils have been removed and the areas will be backfilled.

A bid went out for the remediation projects at Old Dam Road, Jennings Beach, McKinley Elementary School, Mill Hill Elementary School, Osborn Hill Elementary School, Sunset Avenue and Southport Beach.  Bids are due by 2/28/20.
