1/31/2020 - January 31, 2020 Update

General Update:

The Town met with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection on Thursday, January 30th, and discussed the status of the town wide sampling and remediation plans for the sites. 

Ongoing Testing of Fill Use Sites: 

Results for three additional sites on the Supplemental List have been received and the results are now posted at the Testing Results pulldown menu on the Fill Use Page.  These sites and results are as follows:

Lake Mohegan Trail Head – No Residential Direct Exposure Criteria Exceedances

Senior Center Gazebo Project - No Residential Direct Exposure Criteria Exceedances

Ye Yacht Yard - No Residential Direct Exposure Criteria Exceedances

 

Samples have been collected and we are waiting for results from the following Supplemental List sites:

Beach Road

Frank Rice Senior Trail/Oldfield/Old Dam Rd Open Space

Hillside Road

Hoyden’s Hill

Mill Hill Road

Penfield Paving Job

Perry Street Trail Head

Site Specific Updates:

Burroughs Park: All work is complete.  The remediation work has been completed and the area has been backfilled.  The confirmation sample results are now posted on the Fill Use Page.

Gould Manor Park:  Previous results indicated a legacy Arsenic issue that extended toward the baseball field.  Additional delineation samples will be taken and analyzed until the extent of the contamination is determined. 

Jennings Beach: Delineation sampling of the water line area has been completed and the updated map has been posted on our website.  The Licensed Environmental Profession (LEP) firm Tighe & Bond is developing a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) to address the Arsenic and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) that were found.

Jennings Elementary School:  All work is complete.  The remediation work has been completed and the areas have been backfilled. The confirmation sample results are now posted on the Fill Use Page.

McKinley Elementary School: The samples collected in November indicated the presence of non-friable tile that contained Asbestos, these results were posted in December.  Additional delineation sampling was conducted in December to verify the extent of the asbestos containing material, Arsenic and PAHs.  The updated map can now be found on the Fill Use Page. The LEP is working on developing a RAP for the former playground area and this area is fenced off.  This area was tested by the Fairfield Public Schools as part of their playground testing, there was no fill from the Julian fill pile used in this area.

Mill Hill School:  Additional delimitation sampling was conducted in December along the ADA sidewalk for PAHs.  The updated map can now be found on the Fill Use Page and two samples indicated exceedances that will be addressed through soil removal prior to the planned removal of the sidewalk during the upcoming construction. The LEP is working on developing a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for the sidewalk area and the areas are currently covered.

Osborn Hill School:  The LEP is developing a RAP for PAHs for the area adjacent to the parking lot. Work will be starting next weekend to address the exceedances and will continue through the month on the weekends until the area is excavating, sampled, and backfilled.

Old Dam Road-Tennis/Rec Building Exterior Areas: The RAP has been reviewed by the Town and will be presented to DEEP PCB Division for their review and comment.  It will be posted on the Fill Use Page when their review is completed and the plan is finalized.

Sunset Avenue- The RAP has been completed and posted on the Fill Use Page.  We anticipate the work beginning in the next few weeks.
