11/30/2021 - Using the USDA-NRCS Web Soil Survey mapping tool

The following provides basic instructions for using the USDA-NRCS Web Soil Survey mapping tool on any parcel in the United States:

  1. Log onto the Web Soil Survey here: https://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/App/HomePage.htm
  2. Click the green button towards the top of the page that says "Start WSS"
  3. Click on the yellow "Address" box on the left side of the page and type in the site address (i.e. 725 Old Post Road, Fairfield, CT) and click the view button
  4. Using the zoom in/out tools, locate the subject parcel, zoom-in is already the default
  5. In the toolbar at the top of the screen, locate the two "AOI" options for square and polygons.  These tools will create your "Area of Interest" depending on what shape you're interested in
  6. Draw a square or polygon around the subject parcel and the program will return a blue-lined area once entered
  7. Once the parcel contains the AOI in blue lines, click the yellow "Soil Map" tab at the top of the page.
  8. You're Complete! The mapped soil types are included to the left of the AOI, including soil descriptions and distribution within the AOI
