Fairfield's government is successful due in large part to the cooperative effort of over 400 elected and appointed Town officials and board members. The vast majority are volunteers.
Fairfield operates under a Representative Town Meeting (RTM) form of government. There are ten voting districts with five representatives elected per district every two years.
The administration of town affairs lies with the three member Board of Selectmen. The First Selectman is the town's chief administrative officer and highest elected official. Elections for First Selectman and Selectmen are held every four years.
A variety of elected and appointed boards meet regularly to make rules and decisions that govern the town departments. Boards also dictate many other things around town, among them: beach, dump, and parking fees; placement of road signs; how land, water, and facilities can be utilized; and what programs will be enacted. Boards also engage in research and attempt to find solutions to topics that affect town life. They also oversee town construction projects.
The rules and regulations governing Fairfield can be found in the Town Code. The Town Charter and all town ordinances, rules and regulations have been approved, adopted, ordained and enacted and are codified and consolidated into titles, chapters and sections in the Town Code.
Citizens are encouraged to attend town meetings. Those who can't attend meetings can watch them live or on demand on FairTV, Fairfield’s Education and Government Access Channels.
