If you will not be able to make it to the polls on the day of an election, primary, or referendum, you may vote absentee, either in person or by mail. Absentee Voting is permitted in the State of Connecticut for any of the following reasons:
- physical disability
- absence from the town during all of the hours of voting
- religious tenets which forbid secular activity on Election Day
Connecticut does not participate in Early Voting. In order to vote absentee you must meet one of the criteria listed above.
Absentee voting, including the processing of Absentee Ballot Applications and the distribution of Absentee Ballots, is managed by the Town Clerk's Office in Old Town Hall, 611 Old Post Road, 203-256-3090. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM and the Saturday before Election Day from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.
Absentee Ballot Applications
Absentee voting in Connecticut is a two-step process. A completed and signed Absentee Ballot Application must be filed with the Town Clerk before a ballot is issued. Absentee Ballot Applications are available online at the Secretary of State's website or in the Town Clerk's Office. The Town Clerk's office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM and from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM on the Saturday before Election Day.
Absentee Ballot Applications may be filed in person, by mail, by fax or by e-mail. If filed by fax or e-mail the original, signed application must be returned with the ballot, or by other means, to the Town Clerk's Office by Election Day for the ballot to be counted.
Those wishing to distribute five or more Absentee Ballot Applications must apply to the Town Clerk in person to receive forms.
Absentee Ballot Distribution
Absentee Ballots become available 31 days prior to an election. Within that 31 day window, Absentee Ballots are issued by the Town Clerk's Office upon receipt of a signed and completed Absentee Ballot Application. If the applicant returns his/her application in person, the ballot will be given to the applicant. If the applicant returns the application by any other method (mail, fax, e-mail, a spouse or friend brings it in) the ballot will be mailed to the applicant. An unvoted Absentee Ballot cannot be handled by another individual. Absentee Ballots must be mailed to the applicant if the applicant cannot or does not appear in person.
Special circumstances apply when a voter is hospitalized within five days of the election. Contact the Town Clerk's Office for more details on Emergency Absentee Voting.
Absentee Voting in Person
Within 31 days of an election, if you meet the absentee voting criteria above and wish to absentee vote in person, visit the Town Clerk's Office at 611 Old Post Road (203-256-3090) Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM or the Saturday before Election Day from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Registered voters can submit their Absentee Ballot Application, receive their Absentee Ballot and vote in the same visit.
Connecticut does not have an early voting option. You must meet the absentee voting criteria to vote by Absentee Ballot.
Absentee Voting by Mail
Absentee Voting can be accomplished by mail. A signed Absentee Ballot Application must be received by the Town Clerk before an Absentee Ballot can be mailed out. Thirty one days prior to an election, the Town Clerk's Office begins mailing out applicants' Absentee Ballots. When returning an Absentee Ballot by mail, please take special care to follow the instructions that are included in the envelope. If the materials you return are not properly signed and sealed, your vote may not be counted on Election Day.
Absentee Ballots must be received in the Town Clerk's office by 8:00 pm on Election Day.
